The Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Golf Balls

Ever wondered “are women’s golf balls different to mens”? You’re not alone! I’m Kirsty, and I’ve tested hundreds of golf balls and helped many amateur golfers, both men and women, find the perfect ball for their game.

Here’s the secret – there’s no such thing as a “women’s golf ball”; that’s just marketing, for the most part. Golf balls branded for women are just made with characteristics like lower compression and a dimple pattern to get the ball get in the air faster for people with slower swing speeds – that’s it, mainly.

Today, I’m going to explain those differences such as compression, dimple patterns and design features. I’ll also show you what swing speeds might benefit the most from women’s golf balls and bust some myths and misconceptions that still, unfortunately, fly around the clubhouses and driving ranges.

These balls can, and do, tend to benefit women players more, but some women players prefer a non-gender-specific ball for their game and I’ve even coached men with slower swing speeds that have found “women’s” golf balls work wonders for their game instead!

The best golf ball branded as women’s has to be the Srixon SOFT FEEL Lady, which you can read more about in my other article “Best Golf Balls for Women.”

Why Golf Balls Matter

Before we dive into the specifics, it’s important to set the scene because not all golf balls are created equal. Some are designed to give you more distance, while others help you nail those tricky shots around the green.

Swing speed is a big deal here. If you’ve got a fast swing, you’ll want a ball with higher compression that can handle that power. But if your swing is on the slower side, a lower compression ball will give you that nice, soft feel and help you get more distance without needing to swing harder.

Then there’s the material and construction of the ball. Urethane covers are great for advanced players who need better control and spin, especially in the short game. Ionomer covers, on the other hand, are tougher and might be better for beginners or anyone looking for something more budget-friendly.

Bottom line: picking the right golf ball is about more than just choosing your favorite brand or color. It’s about finding a ball that matches your playing style and helps you perform at your best

When you understand how different balls can affect your game, you’ll be able to make a choice that really works for you.

Main Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Golf Balls

Remember, these differences aren’t saying a “women’s” ball is better or worse – it’s about matching the ball to the player’s swing characteristics.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, if you have a particular type of swing, you can both play with a box of balls marketed as “women’s” to help shoot your best scores.

Understanding Golf Ball Compression

The biggest difference is compression. Women’s golf balls typically have lower compression ratings.

Why? Because lower compression balls are easier to compress, meaning they work better for slower swing speeds. They give you that satisfying, soft feel and help you get more distance even if you’re not swinging like a pro. For more on this, visit one of my other articles which looks at whether softer golf balls work better for women.

The Role of Dimple Patterns

Next up, dimples. Yep, those little indents on the ball make a big difference. Women’s golf balls often have dimple patterns designed to increase lift and keep the ball in the air longer.

This is especially helpful if you have a slower swing speed, as it helps you achieve a better trajectory and more distance.

Choosing the Right Cover Material

Women’s golf balls usually feature a softer cover, often made from materials like Surlyn or ionomer, which enhance durability and feel.

And yes, they often come in a variety of colors and designs – but that’s more about personal preference than performance.

Most Suitable Swing Speed for Women’s Golf Balls.

Most of the female golfers, mixed junior golfers of and mixed senior golfers I’ve worked with, with a swing speed slower than 85 mph have benefited from using women’s golf balls.

Here’s why:

  • Lower Compression: These balls typically have lower compression ratings (45-70), making them easier to compress at slower speeds. This helps maximize distance and provides a softer feel, even if you’re not swinging like a pro.
  • Optimized Dimple Patterns: The dimple patterns are designed to increase lift and keep the ball in the air longer. This is especially beneficial for slower swings, helping achieve a better trajectory and more distance.
  • Softer Cover: Made from materials like Surlyn or ionomer, the softer cover enhances durability and feel, offering better control around the greens.

Busting Myths and Misconceptions!

When it comes to men’s and women’s golf balls, there are quite a few myths and misconceptions floating around.

So let’s clear up some of the most common ones:

Myth 1: Women’s Golf Balls Are Only for Women

This is probably the biggest myth, which is hopefully proven incorrect by this article today.

The truth is, women’s golf balls are designed with specific characteristics, like lower compression, that can benefit anyone with a slower swing speed. So, if a ball marketed for women suits your game better, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman – use it!

Myth 2: All Women Should Use Women’s Golf Balls

No, not necessarily.

While many women might benefit from the lower compression and specific design of these balls, it’s all about your individual swing. Some female golfers with faster swing speeds might actually perform better with a ball marketed towards men. It’s about matching the ball to your game, not your gender. For more insight on this, visit our article “Can Women Use Men’s Golf Balls

Myth 3: Women’s Golf Balls Are Just a Marketing Gimmick

Sure, marketing plays a role, but there’s more to it.

Women’s golf balls are designed with certain features that can genuinely help players with slower swing speeds. It’s not just about the color or branding—there are real performance benefits for the right player.

Myth 4: Men Can’t Use Women’s Golf Balls

Absolutely false!

If you’re a male golfer with a swing speed slower than 85 mph, you might find that a women’s golf ball works better for you. It’s all about finding the ball that best matches your swing, regardless of the label.

Final Thoughts

So, tackling the question “are women’s golf balls different from men’s” head-on, the short answer is, Yes.

Golf balls marketed towards being more suitable for women, with their lower compression and optimized dimple patterns, are ideal for slower swing speeds. But the main lesson from today is that these balls aren’t just for women; they benefit anyone with a similar swing.

The next article looks into what compression is best for women with slower swing speeds because it’s a very popular question and one that often causes confusion. It’s important you choose the right golf ball based on your swing speed, otherwise you risk hitting wayward shots or shots that don’t get any distance.
